How often should my septic tank be pumped?

Every 3 to 5 years for most Indiana households. A family of five with a 1,000-gallon tank should lean toward every 3 years; a couple with a large tank can stretch toward 5. When we pump your tank we tell you the right interval for your situation.

How often should the septic filter be cleaned?

If your tank has an effluent filter, clean it about every 6 months. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of slow drains in an otherwise healthy system.

What should never go into a septic system?

"Flushable" wipes (they are not flushable), grease and cooking oil, coffee grounds, paint and solvents, harsh chemical drain cleaners, cat litter, and feminine products. If it isn't wastewater or toilet paper, keep it out.

What are the warning signs of septic failure?

Slow drains throughout the house, gurgling pipes, sewage odors indoors or in the yard, standing water or unusually lush green grass over the drain field, and backups. Any of these deserves a call before it becomes an excavation.

Do septic additives actually work?

A healthy septic tank does not need additives — the bacteria arrive free of charge. No additive replaces pumping. Save the money and put it toward a pump-out on schedule.

Should I get a septic inspection before buying a home?

Absolutely. A professional IOWPA certified inspection typically costs a few hundred dollars; replacing a failed system can cost $10,000–$25,000. No septic-served home purchase should close without one.

How do I find my septic tank?

Check your county health department for a system record, look for the cleanout between house and yard, or watch for the area where snow melts first. We can locate it for you — and install risers so you never have to hunt for it again.

What is a septic riser and do I need one?

A riser brings the tank lid up to ground level so future pump-outs don't require digging. It pays for itself in avoided labor within a couple of services, and we can add one during any pump-out.

How long does a septic system last?

A well-maintained conventional system typically lasts 25–40 years. The single biggest factor is regular pumping — solids that reach the drain field shorten its life dramatically.

Can heavy rain affect my septic system?

Yes. Saturated ground keeps the drain field from accepting water, which can cause temporary slow drains or backups. If problems persist after the ground dries, the system needs a look.

How much does septic tank pumping cost?

It depends on tank size, accessibility, and how long since the last pump-out. Call 765-664-1546 with your location and tank details and we'll give you a straight answer before we roll a truck.
